As primeiras fam\u00edlias ocuparam essa regi\u00e3o depois de abril de 1763, quando fugiram de Rio Grande face a invas\u00e3o espanhola que tomou a cidade e tamb\u00e9m S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 do Norte. A presen\u00e7a dessas fam\u00edlias foi consolidada em 1773, quando os portugueses recuperaram o territ\u00f3rio at\u00e9 os limites do Chu\u00ed. Da\u00ed, as sesmarias foram povoadas por grandes manadas de gado vacum, cavalar e ovino, formando assim a base econ\u00f4mica da regi\u00e3o at\u00e9 o ano de 1936. O munic\u00edpio foi criado no per\u00edodo do<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brasil_Imp%C3%A9rio\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Brasil Imp\u00e9rio\">Brasil Imp\u00e9rio<\/a>, como<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Distrito\" title=\"Distrito\">distrito<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>pertencente ao munic\u00edpio de Vila da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o do Arroio, hoje chamado de Os\u00f3rio. Entre<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1920\" title=\"1920\">1920<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>e<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1950\" title=\"1950\">1950<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>ganhou import\u00e2ncia com a implanta\u00e7\u00e3o de um<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porto\" title=\"Porto\">porto<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00e0s margens do Rio Palmares, como tamb\u00e9m uma<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferrovia\" title=\"Ferrovia\">ferrovia<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>at\u00e9 Os\u00f3rio. Formou-se, ent\u00e3o, um entroncamento hidroferrovi\u00e1rio que ligava Torres, Os\u00f3rio e Palmares do Sul com a capital Porto Alegre. O nome &#8220;Palmares&#8221; foi escolhido pelos primeiros moradores portugueses ainda no s\u00e9culo XVIII, visto que nas redondezas havia grande quantidade de butiatuvas (ou butiatubas), cujo conjunto forma aquilo que os portugueses denominavam de &#8220;palmares&#8221;. Na palavra butiatuba, &#8220;tuba&#8221; significa &#8220;lugar&#8221; e &#8220;buti\u00e1&#8221; significa &#8220;planta&#8221;, na l\u00edngua tupi-guarani. \u00c9 uma planta da fam\u00edlia das palm\u00e1ceas, que se adaptam bem ao solo e ao clima da regi\u00e3o. A adi\u00e7\u00e3o do termo &#8220;do Sul&#8221; se deu porque, por volta de<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1944\" title=\"1944\">1944<\/a>, surgiu uma ordem federal de que n\u00e3o poderia haver, dentro de um estado ou pa\u00eds, cidades de nomes semelhantes. Assim, devido \u00e0 revelia dos palmarenses, o nome do distrito de Palmares passou a ser Em\u00edlio Meyer. Somente em 1950 o nome original voltou a ser Palmares, agora agregado ao determinativo &#8220;do Sul&#8221;. Isso ocorreu pois existe um munic\u00edpio com o nome de Palmares, em Pernambuco, que por ser mais antigo teve o privil\u00e9gio de permanecer com o seu nome original. Tal fato foi oficializado por lei da C\u00e2mara de Veradores de Os\u00f3rio por iniciativa de Ant\u00f4nio de Azevedo Pereira, morador de Palmares do Sul.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palmares_do_Sul#cite_note-5\"><span>[<\/span>5<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p><p>Os campos que hoje comp\u00f5em o munic\u00edpio de Palmares do Sul foram doados por meio de<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sesmaria\" title=\"Sesmaria\">sesmarias<\/a>.<\/p><p>O munic\u00edpio se emancipou de<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Os%C3%B3rio_(Rio_Grande_do_Sul)\" title=\"Os\u00f3rio (Rio Grande do Sul)\">Os\u00f3rio<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>em 1982, e seu primeiro prefeito foi o engenheiro agr\u00f4nomo<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ney_Cardoso_Azevedo\" title=\"Ney Cardoso Azevedo\">Ney Cardoso Azevedo<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a
